Discovering Local Fare in Canada's Restaurant City

Ontario’s restaurant city with food made with fresh ingredients, creativity and, above all, love. But even though it’s got some of the best food around, the town is incredibly humble and always welcomes you into its kitchen as if you were family.

I was so lucky to get to call Kingston home for four years while at university. Going out to eat was a great way to learn all about what the city had to offer and was always a great way to bond with new friends.

Get Fancy at Chez Piggy

Chez Piggy is exactly what it sounds like: Fancy enough to be called “chez something”, but casual enough to oink. This was one of my favourite spots when I was living in Kingston because I knew I was having a fresh, local, amazing fine dining experience without feeling totally pretentious. The type of place where you could order a havarti panini with rosemary chips for lunch and come back for dinner for the braised beef short rib. They’re also known for some of the freshest and most delicious seafood in town, like the catch of the day and their famous fresh, sustainable oysters. T

It Takes Two to Tapas

Tapas is a really fantastic way to get to try lots of incredible plates at once. Plus it’s always a great way to bond with others - because what brings people together better than good food? Tango Nuevo was always the spot I went to whenever I felt like celebrating something major or just your average Tuesday. It’s super classy, but still totally cozy; perfect for a date night or a night out with friends. The kibbeh stuffed meatballs are absolutely delicious and for those who like seafood, you should definitely try the grilled octopus pintxo. As for all of you vegetarians out there, you should for sure order the mediterranean eggplant. But I promise, meat-eaters, you’ll love it, too.

I Know This Is Cheesy, But...

You really can’t go to a university town without trying a slice of ‘za. Kingston obviously has the greasy pizza for a night with your crew, but you also have to try a gourmet pizza at Wooden Heads. They’ve got a list of delicious pizzas on their menu (my personal favourite is the Dynamo 2.0 with pesto, feta, smoked chicken, cherry tomatoes, honey drizzle), or you can make your own, all made in, you guessed it, a woodfire pizza oven. It’s also got a pretty intensive wine list for all of  the connoisseurs out there. Or for anyone trying to impress their date. To comply with spacing protocols, there’s currently a two hour limit per table, but that’s more than

Une Crepe, S’il Vous Plaît

Known as “a taste of Paris in the heart of Kingston,”  Geneva Crêpe Café Bistro was always one of my favourite spots downtown. Of course they make decadent, sweet crêpes, like my go-to: the deep-dutch brownie sundae. But they also make unbelievable savoury crepes, too for when you can’t bring yourself to eat dessert for dinner (although you totally can, I did it quite often!). Because they’re made of buckwheat, the crêpes, themselves, are gluten-free and vegan. Definite must-trys are the Parisian, with brie, sauteed mushrooms, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions and  sun dried tomato pesto, or the signature Bomba

Late Night Bites With a Retro Vibe

There’s a very good chance you’ll spend a night out on the town, and find yourself craving some late-night bites. That’s where Tommy’s comes to the rescue! The totally retro diner has an awesome late-night menu, with everything you need for those post-midnight nibbles, like mozzarella sticks, cheesy bread, burgers and perogies. He’s also got some pretty creative dishes, too, like perogy poutine and onion ring poutine, which is actually pretty good. And don’t be surprised if you find yourself heading back there in the morning. The restaurant offers a full-day breakfast (yep, even late at night) and is the perfect spot to start yet another beautiful day in Kingston.

Sweet Endings

What better way to end things off than with something sweet? There are lots of great places in Kingston that serve amazing ice cream, but I always found myself heading back to Mio Gelato (yep, even in the winter because it’s just that good!). The team is dedicated to bringing the world of gelato to the people of Kingston, and it’s always service with a smile. Using fresh produce and dairy, they make everything right in Kingston to bring a bit of the city into everything that they create. They have dairy-free sorbetto (raspberry and chocolate pudding was my combo), frozen yoghurt and
