I love that my local region, BCs Kootenay Rockies, is an outdoor-lovers paradise. Each of these small mountain towns offers the perfect environment to fall in love, or celebrate your love, for each other.

Kate Robertson is the kind of traveler who is always up for an adventure. Fortunately, near her home in the Kootenay Mountains of British Columbia, and outdoor-lovers paradise, she never runs out of fun things to do, whether it’s hiking, biking, or playing in the snow.

An adrenaline-fueled love affair

Is extreme adventure what keeps your relationship fire going? Book a weekend of cat-skiing at the Island Lake Lodge, where you can find that adrenaline rush together as you swoop through powder-filled bowls and challenging tree runs. At the end of the day slow it down with a spa experience and enjoy each other in your deluxe lodge accommodation (all three of the lodges are stunning, but I like the dramatic views of the Rocky Mountains best from the Tamarack Lodge). Vinophiles can rejoice, as the Lodge’s Tamarack Restaurant houses a 3,000 bottle wine library. This place is so romantic, that they offer a weekend wedding package, for those lovers wanting to take their commitment up a notch in an idylli

Compare your taste in arts

Nelson is a must-visit if the arts are what draw the two of you together. Known as Canada’s Best Small Art Town, cultural vibrancy is flourishing here. Start with a stroll through the Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art and History (this historical building is one of the most picturesque in Nelson, and that’s saying something, as there are a lot of them) to view their collection of pieces ranging from paintings to multi-media to virtual exhibitions. There are numerous permanent sculptures on display in the streets, and in recent years, Nelson started hosting the Nelson Mural Fest, meaning now there are more than 30 murals to check out as you wander the streets (download a mural map here). Warm up in the outdoor hot springs

Picture this. Steamy outdoor hot pools. Snowflakes falling. Just the two of you. For the ultimate romance adventure, head to Ainsworth Hot Springs, just 40 minutes north of Nelson. My favourite spot at Ainsworth is the mineral pool experience, a natural 150-foot hot pool cave where you and your special someone can cozy up in the secluded softly-lit limestone alcoves. The hot springs facility is now owned by the Lower Kootenay Band of Creston, which is appropriate, as it was the Ktunaxa First Nations who first frequented these mineral waters for their healing and rejuvenation powers. With on-site accommodation and dining options, it’s easy to spend the whole weekend just enjoying the ambiance and eac

Take a trip to Europe without leaving Canada

If you’re a couple who is missing travel (like me) through these COVID-19 times, check out Kimberley. This small mountain town, just a half hour from Cranbrook, is like a visit to Bavaria. Take a stroll hand-in-hand through the pedestrian-only brick plaza (appropriately named platzl) where you can browse cute boutiques, check out the giant chess pieces and even try your hand on the public climbing wall. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love to visit Canada’s largest free-standing cuckoo clock (in the platzl), so make sure you have a loonie with you to entice lederhosen-clad “Happy Hans” to pop out, yodel a tune and salute you with his beer stein. Then head to the Old Bauernhaus Restaurant f

Gamble the night away

Nothing says adult-getaway more than a casino, but Cranbrook’s Casino of the Rockies is so much more. As part of St. Eugene’s Golf Resort & Casino, this Spanish-colonial style resort nestled in a quiet pastoral setting in the middle of the Rocky Mountains is the perfect romantic getaway. Once a residential school, the Ktunaxa First Nations have reclaimed it and turned it into a luxury casino and golf resort. On-site you will also find an Interpretive Centre filled with historical artifacts, contemporary art and archival photograph displays, where you can learn about the rich heritage, mythology and culture of the Ktunaxa. (Note that the property is currently closed due to COVID, but you can bo

Twirl and glide on the world’s longest skateway

If stars, a stunning mountain backdrop and the longest natural skating trail in the world spell romance to you, check out Lake Windermere Whiteway. You can pick up some skates at Inside Edge in Invermere and then when evening rolls around, don your headlamps, grab your partner’s hand and skate the 29.8 kilometres cleared ice trail around the lake. It can get chilly here, so wear your woolies--but no need to worry—after you can warm up at the nearby Radium Hot Springs mineral pools. To keep the winter rustic romance vibe going, stay overnight in a cozy yurt at Radius from Within, where you can cuddle up in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine, gazing into each other’s eyes

Tie the knot at the top of Revelstoke Mountain Resort

Ready to make the romance official? There’s no place more special to tie the knot than at the top of a mountain. Every Valentine’s Day, at Revelstoke Mountain Resort, they hold short, but sweet, ceremonies beneath a simple altar (there’s nothing simple about the scenery though—with a drop-dead gorgeous backdrop of the Monashee Mountains). As if the location is not amazing enough—the ceremonies are free (just buy a marriage license from the Court House for $100 beforehand). Revelstoke has a ton of romantic honeymoon activities op
